BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG

A Biopic like BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG evolves with a core lesson as the reference point, as it was evident in the titles in the end, it being- perseverance , determination and dedication, it being etched out in stark motif under the signature of Milkha Singh, the legend himself. It being the key referral, the film continues to return back to this motif time and again, but layered in the oeuvre are various other lessons of life that are worth pondering over:

Scars of childhood could manifest in adulthood at times when it is not ordained: It has been an enigma how Milkha Singh lost the race in Rome Olympics by a fraction of a second, and the film has been able to bring it out that it was the scar from the past that came to haunt Milkha inappropriately when he was leading the race. He had been running and the trigger for run was to save his life from the marauder who was silhouetted and had an element of dread in his persona.

Psychological counseling is a must for sportsmen: Psychological counseling has now become a norm, but it still is more pronounced in cricket, however BMB underlines the fact that if sports in India has to proliferate and expand, the sports persons need good psychological counseling to emerge winner.

Simple games from past need reintroduction in the lives of children of today: Our children who are growing with a profuse dose of video games and mobile applications, the sheer joy of games being played one generation ago is not a reference point. The joy of searching the middle finger and such other games, fostered bonding, and need to be introduced again, as the fostering among the present generation is more with the gizmos around which the lives of the children revolve these days. The simple games of the past fostered spirit of bonhomie which is lacking in present generation, and it needs to be revived on an urgent basis.

Without a teacher one cannot succeed in life:  it has been an old saying बिन गुरु ज्ञान कहाँ से पाऊँ and where it not for two gurus in the form of Pawan Malhotra and Yog Raj Singh, a Milkha would not have been made. If one has to succeed in life it is a guru who is the guiding force to do it, and one needs to do what the guru says then only can find the oyster.

Enticements in form of gifts or physical attraction is a deterrence in achieving the goal: There always is a temptation as one is growing up in his career of advances from the other sex and if one succumbs to the temptation then the ultimate goal is lost. Milkha Singh realized it at his own peril when he had a one night stand in Australia, but later on did not succumb to the temptation of the swimmer and clearly underlined that one may falter once, but he draws lesson from it and perseveres along.

Quest to summit is a lonely pursuit:  if one aspires to reach the top, one has to understand that it is a journey that has to be done alone, and it is spewed with all kind of obstacles. Challenge is to overcome them and emerge triumphant.

One needs to have a target in life: After floundering in Australia, Milkha Singh had the target of world record written on a tissue paper and it became his sole reason for existence. As it was advised to Arjun in Mahabharata that he has to focus on the eye of the fish, for Milkha Singh the focus was the target. As a matter of fact for Milkha Singh the quest for target began with a glass of milk and boiled down to overhauling the time to finish the 400 metre race.

Discipline is the key: The kind of discipline that army provides must have been the key factor in making Milkha Singh what he ultimately became, and one wonders, whether Milkha would have been able to achieve were it not for the discipline that was instilled in him by the army.
