THE DIRTY PICTURE: Too dirty to telecast on Television

THE DIRTY PICTURE

Karan Johar’s tweet after THE DIRTY PICTURE was not telecast on national network, hit the nail right on the head about the double standards of the government. Karan in his tweet remarked that on one hand the government has awarded the best film to THE DIRTY PICTURE on the other hand it is not being considered worthwhile to be telecast in prime time. Besides, if it is to be telecast then it has to be done with so many cuts that the film would become mincemeat.

The reluctance of the government not to telecast would have been appreciated if the arm of the government that supposedly monitors the content on television would have stopped other such programmes from being aired. It would be pertinent to point out a few of such incidents, first and foremost under this category was introduction of Pamella Anderson in BIG BOSS where she was displaying here assets in a much more blatant manner than what has been shown in THE DIRTY PICTURE. Pamella Anderson show was telecast at 9 p.m.

In the same manner in an episode of the serial IS JUNGLE SE MUJHE BACHAO Shweta Tiwari and Nigar Khan while bathing in Itsy Bitsy bikinis had left nothing to the imagination. The Splits Ville is telecast at 7 p.m. and the situations which pans during the course of telecast are much more amorous than what THE DIRTY PICTURE contains. A Sunny Leone’s entry into the current season of BIG BOSS, she is an established porn star and her entry marketed in the same manner to catch eyeballs was never frowned upon, then why is there a certain sense of reservation about allowing the telecast of THE DIRTY PICTURE.

As it is, most of the film lovers of the country would already have seen THE DIRTY PICTURE either in the cinema hall or by downloading the film through various online platforms. In such a scenario to have a holier than thou approach to the issue of telecast is indicative of the double standards being practiced.

For a television channel which had bid big to obtain telecast rights for THE DIRTY PICTURE it is a double whammy as it has paid the telecast amount to the producer and director of the film, but it has been left twiddling its thumbs owing to high-handed attitude of the concerned authorities.

May be they need to rethink on the whole issue and be bold enough to allow THE DIRTY PICTURE to be telecast without any cuts, as the film has been passed by the Censor Board and this additional censoring undermines the wisdom and competence of the Censor Board in passing the film. Let’s hope that the better sense prevails.
