One of the binding elements of last few unconventionally successful films in Hindi cinema has been the strong character actors who have been the part of the cinematic oeuvre. These character actors have in their own way been catalytic in contributing towards making the film a successful proposition. At the time when LIFE KI TOH LAG GAYI is releasing which in fact is a construct of character artists as lead players and included in this list are Ranvir Shorey, Kay Kay Menon, Tom Alter etc., Hindi cinema seems to be slowly coming back to the times when character actors in the film played the role of binding elements and were the catalyst in carrying the movie forward.
Some of the major character actors apart from those who form a part in LIFE KI TOH LAG GAYI who have made a predominant mark include Saswata Chatterjee who played the role of Bob Biswas in KAHAANI, Poorna Jagannathan in DELHI BELLY, Devyendu Sharma in PYAAR KA PANCHNAMA, Nawazuddin Sididiqui as the IB officer in KAHAANI and Gopi in PAAN SINGH TOMAR, Pitobash Tripathy in SHOR IN THE CITY and Parineeti Chopra in LADIES VS RICKY BAHL. Interestingly enough most of these actors after enacting a strong character role, are now graduating towards métier roles in their subsequent films, which underlines the fact that now cinematic fraternity has started realizing the role of performance in making a film a hit commercially.
Though the roles that these character actors get to play in the film may not be of a longer duration, but with the power packed performance they make their characters stand out in the film and earn laurel for themselves. Take for example Saswata Chatterjee, from KAHAANI who has developed an amazing fan following as a contract killer, a fact that has never happened earlier but it is his performance which has created such a fan following.
For a change this new phase of character actors in Hindi cinema is characterized by actors who are well versed in their craft, either having worked on the stage, or are well educated enough to add substance to the role that they get an opportunity to play. One could say with gut conviction that it is the emergence of these character actors in the recent times that has been a catalytic factor in the emergence of the Indian cinema in Hindi film industry in a big way. Not hankering after money but yearning for performance, these actors are in their own way writing a new idiom of film making in the world of Hindi cinema.
The success of LIFE KI TOH LAG GAYI could indeed lead to more such novel ventures where character actors play the lead role and facilitate a film stand out on the sheer merit of performance, rather than owing to a star value. Once this happens Indian cinema would enter into a delightful phase.
